Police media spokesman’s office said that Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya had addressed a letter to the IGP with regard to providing security to candidates contesting at the general election. In the letter the Election Commissioner has emphaised that he believes that even by now police security has been provided to political leaders, former ministers, MPs, provincial subject ministers and provincial councilors.
Reports say that in addition the Election Commissioner has also given a list of election candidates who should be provided security. The Election Commissioner has informed that if candidates contesting at the parliamentary election request for security, action should be taken with regard to such requests without delay.
