The JVP opposed the proposal to increase the allowance for attending parliamentary sessions for MPs to Rs.20,000 says Information Secretary of the JVP Parliamentarian Vijitha Herath.
The ruling party has made the proposal at a House Committee held recently. At present the attending allowance for a MP is Rs.500. If the proposal is implemented it would go up by 40 times.
The number of days Parliament meets for a month is eight and if the new proposal is implemented an MP would get an allowance of Rs.1,60,000 for a month.
Mr. Vijitha Herath said the JVP MPs have informed the relevant authorities regarding the opposition to the proposal in writing.
However, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, participating at the budget debate, had said MPs allowances should be increased as their expenses had gone up.
